SELECTED COMMENTARY

Patricia Schnall Gutierrez's installations are what initially drew me to her work.  She thoughtfully weaves together media, medium, and social critique, often incorporating community participation with an eye toward unpacking conventional concepts of "women's work." Feminist inquiry into art and culture is a necessity, and Patricia's works are exemplary in that they offer easy entry into a conversation about standards, values, and lived experience.

Patricia Schnall Gutierrez's work is best described as evolved, in the sense of becoming ever more her own self as an artist.  I have followed her work for more than a decade now and no matter what stage of her growth as an artist, her oeuvre speaks to the contemporary, the personal, and the universal, over time.  Her dexterity as an artist can be seen in her photography, installations, paintings, and meticulous allowance for her voice to translate into each of these mediums.  Patricia has a keen sense of presence and respect for the past; her work is a beautiful vehicle for those temporal realities to speak to us through her eloquent, ever-evolving voice.

It was a pleasure curating Patricia's exhibition, Remember Me, at the Burchfield Penney Art Center.  She is a kind, trusting, and collaborative artist to work with, which made for a delightful experience of building on each other's ideas to bring the exhibition to life. Her work spans so many important themes of identity, femininity, and the ways we evolve into new versions of ourselves over time.  It has been a joy to see how deeply these concepts resonate as visitors engage with her work.

While other artists resort to using elements of shock, Schnall Gutierrez favors a subtle and intimate approach to the subject, supported by the qualities of the materials.  Her work uncovers the intense emotions that women feel in the intimacy of their homes and the overwhelming tasks that derive from keeping a house and a family.
